Rules in Tatami

There are certain rules and principles of conduct in the gym that must be followed in the classroom. Etiquette of the relationship between instructor and students is a great example of the development of discipline and psychological stability in the training process. Observance of special ceremonies in aikido promotes training of awareness and attentiveness.

Before class, wear a kimono, it should be worn on the naked body (except for underwear for girls) Before you start, take off metal and plastic objects (watches, chains, etc.) - anything that could hurt you or your partner.

Each student must maintain cleanliness, maintain order and create an atmosphere of understanding with partners. It is strictly forbidden to bring food, drinks, items that do not belong to the training process on the tatami.

It is very important not to be late and to be present at the beginning of classes. If the student is late, you should wait under the tatami until the teacher allows the lesson to begin. Before entering the classroom, the student bows to the wall with a portrait of the founder of aikido (shomen) in gratitude for the opportunity to train in this place. After training, leaving the gym, you must also bow.

Students greet the instructor with a bow and say, "Oss." At the entrance or exit with the tatami, you also need to bow to the central wall of the hall (shomen).

Students practice barefoot, in some cases with the permission of the instructor in socks. It is forbidden to wear tatami shoes. The shoes are placed in a special place for her.

Before classes, students are seated in one or two straight lines according to the gradation of the belts. With the highest rank on the right, with a lower - on the left. After that, the student with the highest rank gives two commands: "Shomen ni ray" - a bow to the central wall in honor of the founder and the traditions of Aikido and "Sensei ni ray" - a bow to the teacher.

If a student needs to leave the tatami during class, he or she should ask the instructor for permission.

If DOGI gets into a mess during training, partners should bow to each other, then stand up straight and correct their shape. Before and after the techniques, the partners should bow to each other and say "Oss".

If the teacher points out mistakes to the student in the process of performing the technique, the student should bow down and say "Oss" or "Thank you."

At the end of the lesson, students line up again in one or two lines and make two bows as in the beginning of the training. Students get up only after the instructor has left the tatami.

Only the instructor decides whether he will teach the student.

The tatami is not a place for resolving disputes, it is a place for achieving harmony. All students participate in creating a favorable atmosphere of harmony and respect in the classroom.

Respect those students who study longer than you. Do not argue with them about the techniques being studied. You need to remember that you came to the hall to learn about new things and improve your knowledge.

You should also refrain from teaching and correcting to your partners - if necessary, the instructor himself will point out mistakes in the performance of techniques by the student.

If you want to ask the instructor a question, you need to approach him, bow and wait until he addresses you.

Never stand idle on the tatami. Either train or sit in the seiji.

Aikido is not a religion. Bowing in this oriental martial art is devoid of religious meaning. It is a way to thank the founder of Aikido and his main followers for the established system of spiritual education and evolving training methods.
